MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE) Due to continuous rain caused by Low Pressure Area (LPA), classes in all public and private schools at the National Capital Region are suspended today (Thursday), Department of Education (DepEd) Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali said in an interview in “Dyaryo Sa Radio” program of 990 AM DZIQ Radyo Inquirer early Thursday morning.
The suspension covers pre-school, elementary and high school levels.
“We’ve coordinated with Pagasa and we were advised the heavy rains could continue today so even if there’s no storm signal yet, the weather might cause flood and pose danger to our students,” said Umali in Filipino in a phone interview.
He added the decision to suspend classes in other affected areas like Bulacan, Pampanga and nearby provinces in the Calabarzon area—Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon—will depend on DepEd’s regional directors and respective local government officials.
“We are currently coordinating with our regional directors,” Umali said at 4:45 a.m. Thursday.
As of 5:27 am, it was reported that classes in all levels in public and private schools in Batangas City and Bauan town in Batangas province are also suspended.
According to Pagasa’s website, as of 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, LPA “was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 50 km Northwest of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro (13.7°N, 120.6°E) embedded along the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting the country.” Totel V. de Jesus, INQUIRER.net

Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz has a year-end advice to students as well as the unemployed:
”Please visit the DOLE career guide portal to know your job prospects in 2011.”
The labor and employment chief offered this advice yesterday after the Bureau of Local Employment (BLE) had updated its website to include more information about in-demand careers and occupations that Filipino students, the unemployed and the under-employed, and even those who would want to switch careers, would be interested in.
"Today’s world of work needs knowledge workers; workers who have HOTS, or “higher order thinking skills”; workers who are multi-skilled, confident, adaptable, flexible, learnable, and trainable,” Baldoz said.
”More than this, today’s workers should know and be familiar with the occupations that interest them; occupations that require their abilities and capabilities, and occupations that are in-demand, and one of the ways to do this is by visiting our BLE website where there is a career guide section. Students who, after graduation from college, will join the labor force, should visit this website to find out more about their career prospects,” she added.
The BLE, among its mandates of which is to formulate policies, standards, and procedures on productive manpower resources and their development, utilization, and allocation and to develop and maintain a labor market information system in aid of proper manpower development planning, maintains a website that provides local and even overseas workers rich information that can help them in their search for jobs and livelihood opportunities.
Its website, www.ble.gov.ph, has a career guide section that contains a series of occupational ‘briefs’ or summary information about hard-to-fill and highly in-demand occupations.
This carrer guide section supports the Phil-Jobnet, the official government job matching portal, which as of this date contains over 50,000 job vacancies, local and overseas.
“The data and information contained in the career guide portal of the BLE are exactly what workers need today,” Baldoz said.
The career guide section is very helpful to young students planning their university courses and workers who would like to shift careers because it tells them such information as the nature of a particular job, basic educational requirements, skills and competencies, prospective salary or compensation, prospect for career advancement, employment opportunities, and cost of education.
“The section even offers information about the physical attributes of prospective applicants,” Baldoz said.
The career guide section presently has 101 career occupations with summary information, and the BLE plans to publish hard copies in pamphlet format of these career guides in 2011. Read more...
